Speaking about Their Accomplices Wore Robes
Learning how to talk about what I wrote
First write the book. Then learn how to talk about it.
That’s typically the process for authors. I’ve finished Their Accomplices Wore Robes. Now I’m learning how to speak about it. Distilling a 200,000+ word book, a sprawling history, seems daunting. But the goal remains straightforward: bring the book’s central points to life in speech as I did in prose.
The best way to learn how to do this strikes me as obvious—just start talking. So I’ve started talking. Here’s my first effort. An interesting part of this video is that my voice doesn’t even sound like this. At least not normally. My wife didn’t even recognize it as me at first. I kept hitting record and this voice kept coming out. Ah well.
I’m going to keep doing videos, and posting them on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. And I will share them here as well.
In this video, I’m outlining the book’s animating conflict. The struggle between caste preservationists and caste abolitionists and how the Supreme Court sits between the two, and has, historically, conspired with the former and sabotaged the latter.
Black people have paid dearly for this.
More to come.
